Who is ‘Building Upon This Foundation’ (Butfon)?
Analogy: Let’s imagine our individual lives as a building-just as Scripture says, “…ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9), and Jesus Christ as the foundation.
The foundation is essential for the overall stability and safety of the building. Its primary purpose is to support the structure while protecting it against moisture, frost heaves, sleet, ice, insects, or other pests. Without a solid foundation, any building might quickly sink unevenly into the ground, damaged by the accumulation of outside forces, or a heavy load could fall and crush the building.
Now, think of a well-built building: it stands firm because of a strong foundation that keeps it even and supported, preventing it from being damaged by external forces.
In the same way, think of Jesus Christ as the strongest and most excellent foundation ever laid. “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11). When you build yourself on Jesus Christ, you have the support you need to withstand the floods, the winds that blow, or the weight of life-because you are a building set on the rock of Christ (Matthew 7:24–27).
Understanding that Jesus is the foundation and you are the building set on Him, the Lord gives strength and support to those who stand on Him: “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39). Jesus Christ is our Savior. In every season of grief, fear, seclusion, failed self-strength, sin, anxiety, anger, weakness, sickness, shame, and more-Jesus Christ, as the foundation of your life, will keep you steady and supported.
If you are asking today, “How can I build upon this foundation?”
The answer is to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, love the Lord your God with all your might, and be doers of God’s Word. These are all in one, which means: Give your life to Christ. Let Christ be the center of your identity. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Trust in God, and He will make your path straight (Proverbs 3:5–6).
Are you curious about the length of time and qualities to build upon the foundation? Building upon this foundation is a lifelong journey. It costs nothing but your willingness to join hands with God. Mary, Rhoda, and Esther all did-they were young girls who joined hands with God to fulfill His mission through them. Jeremiah, David, and Daniel were young boys who also joined hands with God in building themselves into greater tools for His Purpose.
No matter how young or old you are-come with your imperfections and the tools you have. Bring all you are: your story, your heart-because Jesus is about using your imperfections for perfection and your tools to build something bigger than your natural mind can comprehend. “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)
